Como veréis, esta crítica está en español e inglés. La razón es fácil. He decidido hacer doble reseña de aquellos libros que lea en inglés, debido a que tengo algún blog seguidor no-hispanoparlante y porque como habreis comprobado en el margen derecho, me he apuntado al desafío de autores noveles 2011, lo que implica participar en blogs en inglés.

As you can see, my review is in Spanish and English. The reason is easy. I've decided making double review about books I read in English, because I have some non-speaking-Spanish followers and because as you'll have seen in the right side of the blog, I joined to the Debut Author Challenge 2011, which involves participating in speaking-English blogs.

Three years ago, Sophie Mercer discovered that she was a witch. It's gotten her into a few scrapes. Her non-gifted mother has been as supportive as possible, consulting Sophie's estranged father, an elusive European warlock who appears only when necessary. But when Sophie attracts too much human attention for a prom-night spell gone horribly wrong, it's her dad who decides her punishment: exile to Hex Hall, an isolated reform school for wayward Prodigium, a.k.a. witches, faeries, and shapeshifters. By the end of her first day among fellow freak-teens, Sophie has quite a scorecard: three powerful enemies who look like supermodels, a futile crush on a gorgeous warlock, a creepy tagalong ghost, and a new roommate who happens to be the most hated person and only vampire on campus. Worse, Sophie soon learns that a mysterious predator has been attacking students, and her only friend is the number-one suspect.


COMENTARIO PERSONAL/REVIEW

Que la portada sea bonita es un punto a favor de cualquier libro pero si el interior no nos dice nada, solo es eso, una bonita portada. Con este libro me ha pasado todo lo contrario a lo que me ha pasado con otros. Viendo una bonita portada me imaginé que la historia no valdría para mucho. No es así.

Conocemos a Sophie Mercer, hija de una humana y un brujo, cuya madre ha educado lo mejor que ha podido. Sophie adquiere sus poderes a la edad de 13 años y con ello, y sus buenas causas perdidas cometiendo fallidos intentos de magia, vivirá en 19 ciudades diferentes y no logrará tener una vida normal ó una buena amiga, dos cosas que anhela de veras.

Es con 16 años y su última fechoría mágica recién cometida cuando su padre decide internarla en Hécate Hall, Hex Hall para los amigos, un lugar donde hadas, cambiaformas y brujas se reforman y estudian hasta que llegan a la mayoría de edad. Sophie trata de hacerse a la idea de que no será tan horrible, pero ni siquiera tiene una ligera idea.

A su llegada conoce a su compañera de cuarto, Jenna, una vampiresa alojada allí como un caso de beneficencia. Pronto se hacen amigas y pronto también comienzan a sucederse trágicos sucesos que apuntan hacia Jenna. Teniendo en cuenta que las víctimas tienen dos agujeritos en el cuello y que dos más dos son cuatro, todas las miradas apuntan hacia Jenna. Sophie tiene ciertas dudas al principio pero termina defendiéndola a capa y espada. Confía en ella, se han hecho grandes amigas, algo con lo que ella no contaba.

Por otro lado están Elodie y sus dos sombras, Anna y Chaston, un grupo de brujas que al principio muy amables le piden que se una a su aquelarre y que luego, ante la negativa de Sophie, la rechazan y comienzan a marginarla y reírse de ella. También está Archer, el chico guapo por el que todas las colegialas, ya sea hadas, cambiaformas o brujas, babean y ella con el tiempo no será menos. Lástima que Archer ya esté saliendo con alguien, y lástima que ese alguien sea su archienemiga Elodie.

Las cosas no tienen mucho sentido y aunque trate de dárselo, solo poco a poco y con la ayuda de la directora, y de su intuición, finalmente descubrirá que todo el mundo oculta algo y no todos son lo que parecen, incluida ella.

Me han hecho mucha gracia los títulos de las clases que me han recordado sin querer a Harry Potter, la profesora Vandy me ha recordado a Severus Snape, porque todos la odian, y la directora ha mantenido confidencias con el protagonista como ya hiciera en su día Dumbledore a HP. En fin, no podría comparar este libro con Harry Potter puesto que éste trata de cosas más superfluas dejando las escenas peligrosas a un lado, mientras que HP es considerado un clásico para todos nosotros. Aún así he disfrutado de su lectura en dos tardes y le recomiendo.

The beautiful cover is one of the advantages of a book but the inside doesn’t tell us anything, it’s only that, a pretty cover. This book was different for me compared with other ones. Seeing a pretty cover, I supposed that the story wouldn’t be worth. This isn’t it.

The story introduces us to Sophie Mercer, daughter of a human being and a warlock, whose mother has raised Sophie the better possible. Sophie obtains her Powers with 13 years old. Her good lost causes becoming wrong spells that it causes that she and her mother have live in 19 different cities and she hasn’t achieved having a current life or a good friend, two things that she wishes.

When she’s 16 and her last magic misdeed fails, her father decides she joins to Hecate Hall, Hex Hall to the friends, a place where fairies, shape-shifters and witches are reformed and they study until they’re 18. Sophie treats to think it won’t be awful, but not even she doesn’t have a clue.

On the credit side, she meets her roommate, Jenna, a vampire accepted as a charitable work in the school. Soon, they both become friends and, shortly also, a serial of tragic events starts to happen. Realizing that killed or injured people have two little holes in their necks and as sure as night follows day, all the suspicions fall on Jenna. At the beginning, Sophie has certain doubts but eventually defends her tooth and nail. She trusts in her, they have become great friends, something that she didn’t hope.

On the debit side, Elodie, Anna and Chaston, a witches’ coven which needs her to complete a spell. Sophie doesn’t accept to participate and they start to leave her out and laugh of her. As male character, we have Archer, a warlock handsome boy who is the centre of attention of all girls in Hex Hall. It’s a pity Archer is dating with someone else and it’s a pity also that person is the hateful Elodie.

The things doesn’t make sense and though she treats to make it, only little by little and the help of the headmaster and her intuition, finally she’ll find out all the world hides something and nothing is what it seems, even her.

I found it funny to read the titles of the classrooms because they remembered me to Harry Potter, the teacher Vandy so similar to Severus Snape, because she’s hated for all, and the headmaster sharing secrets with the main character as Dumbledore did with HP. Anyway, I couldn’t compare this book with HP because this book appears telling us mixing superfluous things and dangerous scenes, while HP is considered a classical book for all of us. Even so, I enjoyed this book in two evenings and I recommend it.
